I came up with the idea for my safety grip shower rod after spending time searching the internet for anything that would make the shower more safe. I had an older relative who had fallen several times in the shower, so I wanted to get them something to help them be more stable and less likely to fall while showering. I found some grips and holds that attach to the wall side of a shower, but nothing for the curtain side. Trying to grab hold of a wet and slippery curtain is not very easy, and if you do somehow get hold of it, the shower rod will most likely come crashing down, and you will fall with it.
A few years ago, I built a shower curtain rod out of a galvanized pipe for someone with a lower leg injury. With it being solidly screwed into each wall, it gave them something solid to grab hold of to help get themselves in and out of the shower a lot easier. The average shower curtain will fall if you pull down on it with very much pressure. They needed something sturdier, and it worked great.
So, after some trial and error using different parts and components, I finally put together a product that can help provide solid handholds, as well as a structure to stabilize on, to help prevent falls in the shower.
